[LISTEN] WFAN’s Craig Carton Scoops Interview With Ray Rice

'Ray Is Very Remorseful'

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 11TH, 2014 –– WFAN/NYC co-host Craig Carton says Ray Rice “is trying to repair the damage” after shocking video from a February domestic incident resulted in his release from the Baltimore Ravens. As it turns out, both are alums of New Rochelle High School in Westchester County and he spoke at length with the embattled running and relayed details details on Wednesday’s “Boomer &Carton” show. “He’s miserable. He’s embarrassed,” Carton said. “He recognizes that this has now stained who he is as a man. That this is now who he is — this is the impression everybody will have of him other than family members and people closest to him. And he is dedicated to righting that wrong as best he can.” Meanwhile, Janay Rice stood by her husband in a statement Tuesday on Instagram, criticizing the media for making her relive a “nightmare” and taking away Ray Rice’s livelihood. “He is very much in love with his wife,” Carton said of Rice. “They are very much together. They have gone to counseling. He is in this pretrial intervention program. … He’s most likely moving out of Maryland, selling his house. “And I asked him about playing football, and he goes, ‘It’s not on my mind right now.’ What’s on his mind is trying to repair the damage and making sure that people (know) that he is better, his relationship is better — they have a beautiful daughter together — and that’s what his focus is on right now.” Ray is very remorseful, takes full ownership of it and recognizes that this is now what people will think about him. And he has to do a lot of work to try to change that. Because he’d like people to know that’s not who Ray Rice is.” LISTEN HERE

NAB/RAB Chiefs Address Radio Show

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 11TH, 2014 –– Gordon Smith, president and CEO of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), welcomed attendees to this week's radio show in Indianapolis. Marking his fifth year in command he said, 'These past five years have been an incredible privilege for me…it is an honor making sure policymakers and the rest of America truly understand the many ways you give back.' Pointing out some of the challenges back in Washington, D.C. that could impact the ability to serve local communities, he spoke of educating congress on 7new performance tax, which would harm radio stations and put local jobs at risk. "As you well know, this is about artists and record labels insisting we pay them for the airplay they eagerly ask us to play,' said Smith. "Though we’ve been successful thus far, it doesn’t mean we can let down our guard." As for the future, Smith added, "Despite all the competition for consumers’ attention – from the Internet, personal listening devices… and other emerging technologies… radio’s brightest days are ahead." RAB president/CEO Erica Farber opened with what called 'a love story.' 'There was a period a few years ago -- let's call it the Dark Times -- when people enjoyed heralding the death of radio. The world is all new, they cried, and radio is an old medium. PowerPoint decks featured numerous pictures of 1950s families sitting around a giant wireless -- remember the old Sylvanias -- tuning into the Lone Ranger while wearing suits and dresses and hats inside the house. Even the children. Those of us who loved radio were worried. Was our old flame losing its luster? Would we be able to keep the magic alive? Fortunately, it turned out the reports of our death were slightly exaggerated, because we were not alone in our affection for radio. In fact, far from it. People love radio. They loved it in the 50s and they love it now.' She then turned her attention to digital radio saying 'It's the best game in town. It's our fastest growing revenue sector: $889 million dollars last year, and up 12% for the first half of this year.' She added, 'While we all know that digital is radio's new frontier, we have some work to do." 1

Tom 7Brady: “It’s a very sad and tragic situation for everyone that’s involved. You can’t help but see the video and have a strong reaction toward it. There’s really no place for domestic violence in our society. Larry Fitzgerald (shown) said “It’s disturbing, to say the least. It has no place in our society and especially has no place in our league. The commissioner and the Baltimore Ravens took swift action and I think deservingly so. It was really tough to watch that video. I think you have to live your life like you’re always being watched. You have to make sure that you understand that anything you do potentially could change your life. There’s video cameras in malls, there’s video cameras in parking lots. You know, so you have to be aware. But the important thing is just to live life right. Do the right thing and you don’t have to worry about it.” Hear Larry Fitzgerald HERE

I was stuck in the middle of the flood! Water was coming thru my door and then my electrical shut off! I couldn't roll down the window and I couldn't open the doors! The water was rising! I called my partner Rich, he has a jacked up raised F150 ( cuz he lives in BFE)...he pulled up next to me, I kicked the window open climbed on the roof and jumped into his truck! While driving to work at 3:50am in the pouring rain I was cruising in about 6-8 inches of water until the road dipped and the hood of my car was almost under water (shown) I slammed in reverse but with front wheel drive it didn't catch traction so I stepped on the gas to make it the gas station just 15 feet away and the car went dead. I opened the door to get out and water filled the car."

STUDY: Radio Remains Strong With Likely PPM Participants

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 8TH, 2014 –– NuVoodoo Media Services has revealed additional findings from its fourth and latest NuVoodoo Ratings Prospects Study. Among nearly 1100 respondents, ages 14-54 in all PPM markets, 89% use radio daily among those who say they would participate in a PPM-style ratings methodology. Radio remains highly relevant – especially among those who would be inclined to participate in the current ratings system. Leigh Jacobs, Vice President, Research for NuVoodoo said: “Radio remains strong, particularly among could-be ratings participants. These human periscopes who are inclined to participate in the PPM ratings are beneficial in many ways. In our data, we’ve seen that they’re more highly attuned to paying attention to advertising messages and are more likely to enjoy the contests that radio stations use as part of their promotional arsenal. It’s especially beneficial to radio, since fewer listen daily among those who predicted that they wouldn’t participate in a PPM-style methodology. Mike O’Connor, Executive Vice President, Marketing for NuVoodoo said: “Armed with this information and deeper insights beyond, we can help our marketing clients target heavy users of radio with minimal waste. And with Facebook, Google and YouTube at our disposal in 2014, it’s never been more economical to reach them.” Carolyn Gilbert, President for NuVoodoo said: “All broadcasters complain about the ratings, but these data show that, even with the limitations, all in all, PPM ratings are good for radio – unless, of course, one of your important panelists goes on vacation, in which case it’s the worst system ever devised by anyone.” Complete findings of the latest NuVoodoo Ratings Prospects Study are available exclusively to all NuVoodoo clients for their use in developing their marketing and promotion plans for the coming year. Past studies have been fielded late in the year for release after the holidays, but this update was fielded going into the fall ratings season to make sure NuVoodoo clients have the benefit of the very latest intelligence on emerging social media platforms for use in their marketing and promotion plans. Bobby Bones Up In Arms Over CMA Nominee Snub; 'I’m Not Upset At Not Being Nominated, I’m Upset With The Antiquated System.”

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 4TH, 2014 –– Lots of happy faces yesterday as the CMA announced its 2014 radio nominees, but at least one host was far from pleased. Bobby Bones, of the Premiere syndicated The Bobby Bones Show, took to Twitter on Wednesday to vent his disappointment at not being nominated for a CMA Award. According to tennesean.com, Bones tweeted he was the victim of refusing to play the political games necessary to garner a nomination. “It’s not ‘injustice,’ Bones tweeted after learning he didn’t receive a nomination. “I simply don’t play the political games the format is known for. “Going to need a lot of old people in this industry to retire or die before the Nashville ‘guard’ lets something new get recognized.” “I somewhat expected it,” Bones told The Tennessean by email. “But I have to voice my displeasure. We’re the biggest morning show in the country, killing the other stations in Nashville. I have the biggest countdown show in the country and have changed the culture of country radio in a simple 18 months. So, it’s obviously political. I got beat by a NASCAR show.” Bones added: 'Awards in the end aren’t anything but dust collectors,” Bones said. “I’m in the game to change the culture of the format and do lots of great things for people while I’m at it. And if I can make someone’s ride to work a little easier with laughter, that’s perfect too. I’m not upset at not being nominated, I’m upset with the antiquated system.” Bones was co-winner of last year's ACM's on-air personality of the year.

NZ Radio Stations Under Fire After Posting Hacked Nude Photos Of J-Law At Website

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 3RD, 2014 –– The Edge In New Zealand is under fire for publishing hacked nude photographs of Jennifer Lawrence on its website. The actress was among several female celebrities to have explicit images of themselves hacked from their computers and phones and uploaded onto the website 4chan. According to stuff.au.co, the Edge published the photos of Lawrence, but later took them down and supplied a link to them on another website. That link was also taken down later. A spokeswoman for The Edge apologized for the mistake but pointed out that other New Zealand websites had done exactly the same thing before them. At their Facebook page they posted: "We made a mistake yesterday by following what many other NZ and overseas websites had done and posting the photos of Jennifer Lawrence. "We are reviewing our pre-vet systems to avoid any similar mistakes in the future. We unreservedly apologize for posting the photos and confirm they were removed from our site as soon as we became aware of the mistake we had made." Radio Hauraki and ZM also reportedly had the images, or links to them, on their websites but they have since been removed. "This is a flagrant violation of privacy," Lawrence's publicist Liz Mahoney said. "The authorities have been contacted and will prosecute anyone who posts the stolen photos of Jennifer Lawrence." The Edge's Facebook page was inundated with mainly negative feedback about the post. 1

Hartford's Cash Crusader Unmasked As Stunt To Promote Chaz & AJ's Arrival

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 3RD, 2014 –– 102.9 WDRC-FM announced Tuesday morning that Dr. Cash, a.k.a.Evan Blake, who works for 99.1 PLR, was their crusader. In a station release from Connoisseur Media, the stunt was designed to introduce the station's new morning show "Chaz and AJ." According to courant.com, he gave out hundreds of dollars during a Labor Day weekend scavenger hunt and captured the attention of the city and the media. By Tuesday morning, the Twitter account where Dr. Cash disseminated his clues had more than 2,000 followers. Chaz and AJ, longtime hosts on 99.1 WPLR in New Haven and three years on 95.9 WFOX in Stamford and Norwalk, will now be heard on WDRC in mornings. The Courant points out this isn't the first time Hartford has been treated to money give-aways by mystery radio peeps. In 1993, two WTIC-FM disc jockeys spent a week in June cruising around central Connecticut, dressed in white tuxedos, handing out $50 bills as part of a promotion for the station. The Courant wrote at the time: "The Man in White had first appeared with his tuxedo, stretch limo and wad of $50 bills about a week ago. Uttering only 'Everyone needs more,' he slipped quickly and quietly into supermarkets, diners, and shopping malls in several towns to hand out cash at random."

99.9 KEZ's Beth McDonald To Cross 30-Yr. Mark In Phoenix

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 3RD, 2014 –– In radio, it's hard enough keeping steady employment for 30 years straight, but imagine doing so at the same market? This will be the case tomorrow for Beth McDonald, longtime co-host on AC KESZ-FM (99.9 KEZ)/Phoenix. In a nice piece from azcentral.com, writer Randy Cordova explains that she started at KTAR before moving to KLZI (now KESZ). "I got a job as a news reader at KLZI. Over the years, the male lead on the show would leave or get fired. I somehow stuck through all these firings and exits and finally, after the last guy left, I jokingly said to the station manager 'Why don't you let me be the guy?' He said OK." In 1990, she teamed with Bill Austin and the show was branded Beth & Bill. Austin retired in February 2010, making a tearful announcement on the air. What listeners didn't know was that he was battling cancer. He died four months later. For McDonald, it was a difficult time: She was losing a dear friend and facing a career change. After Austin's retirement, "Beth & Bill" became "Beth and Friends." After crossing the 30-yr. mark, it doesn't appear she's planning retirement anytime soon. "For some reason, 30 years has people asking me, but I'm not ready to retire. KEZ has been very good to me. The people who work with me on the morning show: Those are my friends. I tend to be a loner in real life, so those are the people I'm very close to." READ FULL STORY HERE

Jack Diamond Decides To Exit The Max San Diego; 'Could Not Make Personal Pieces Fit'

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 2ND, 2014 –– Former WRQX-FM Wash. host Jack Diamond had a change of mind with this latest move to mornings at Max 107.5 San Diego. Over the weekend he posted on Facebook: 'My move back to San Diego was a sudden one. Really done in a couple days. With Internet research, and some phone calls, I thought I could put the housing and school pieces of the puzzle together pretty quickly. At least find our son a great Montessori School, a program he loves and excels in, and a nice house to rent. Simple, right? Ya know that saying "You can't go home again". It has nothing to do with the "physical" place, but rather time passes and things change. They certainly have in the 25 years I have been away from Southern California. Still LOVE San Diego, but being completely honest, I could not make the personal pieces fit." He also cited the high cost of housing in San Diego and finding places that accepted pets. As for his short lived stay, he said, "I couldn't have been happier, but was desperately worried about the most important thing, my family. They were very understanding in my return to DC. I can't thank them enough. This is 100% on me. The station was and is amazing. It will kick some serious tail in San Diego!
Yes, we're all back together here in Washington, and I am thrilled to be back in my hometown." Diamond was teamed on The Max with Kim Morrison and producer Kayla Yap No word yet on its next move. As of this morning, Kim is still listed at the station's website.

I'm excited about the fact that after almost 33 years, my schedule will open up a little bit." Paul Shaffer will continue to host Paul Shaffer’s Day in Rock and Paul Shaffer’s 60-Second Rewind.' Paul Shaffer’s Day in Rock draws on Shaffer’s vast musical knowledge and ability to comment on the history of rock from his unique perspective. Paul Shaffer commented on his seven-year journey with Day in Rock so far. “It’s what I love,” said Shaffer. “I have a huge compendium of fun facts and comic rock trivia. Everything we talk about is accurate but we present it with a comic twist. Sort of like what Jon Stewart does with the news [on “The Daily Show”], we do with rock history.” Shaffer spent five years with the original "Saturday Night Live," during which he played keyboards, composed special musical material, served as musical director for The Blues Brothers, and was a featured performer. Actress, model and fashionista Cara Delevingne (L) broke the news via her Instagram account a few days ago, where she uploaded a picture of herself with fellow Los Santos DJ Lazlow Jones, along with the caption: "Back with @rockstargames to update my GTAV radio station Non Stop Pop FM for new versions coming this Fall!" It isn't clear yet whether the radio station's track listing will be updated, or whether it's the DJ banter in between songs that's getting an overhaul.

According to wcpo.com, the shooting took place on August 12th involving Blake Seylhouwer (below) who was arrested for and charged with felonious assault and domestic violence after his wife Misty (inset) was struck in by a bullet that ricocheted off the ground and struck her in the head, leg, stomach and neck. When officers arrived, he said it was an accident, but (Misty) was saying something different," Madeira Police Chief Frank Maupin said. "We don't feel it was an accident." At his arraignment August 13, Blake pleaded not guilty to all charges against him.On Wednesday, Misty filed for divorce from Blake, accusing him of adultery, extreme cruelty and gross neglect of duty. UH OH: ALS Wants To Trademark 'Ice Bucket Challenge'

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 29TH, 2014 –– Now that most everyone in radio and beyond has tossed a cold bucket of ice over their heads in the name of charity, comes this: The ALS Association wants to trademark ‘ice bucket challenge.’ According to washingtonpost.com, The ALS Association has raked in more than $94 million in donations from the ice bucket challenge in just under a month. Now, the organization is asking for something else: Trademarks to the phrases “ice bucket challenge” and “ALS ice bucket challenge.” At least one trademark attorney calls the effort “shameful.” Both applications are available for public viewing on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Web site, HERE and HERE. Trademark attorney Erik Pelton spotted the applications Wednesday. “I was upset,” he told The Post. “Similar to the reaction I had last year when I saw the applications for ‘Boston Strong.’ ”While Pelton believes that the “ice bucket challenge” trademark applications will probably be rejected, the applications themselves were enough for the Virginia-based attorney to draw attention to them on his blog. If the applications are approved, Pelton said the charity could use the registration to try and take other groups to court who use it without its permission; to take control of social media accounts using the phrases “ice bucket challenge” or “ALS ice bucket challenge”; and to “potentially stop other charities from using it.” In an e-mailed statement to The Post, the ALS Association defended its trademark applications, noting that the charity only applied “after seeing many examples of unscrupulous profiteers trying to drive revenue to themselves, instead of the fight against ALS.”

Opponents Hold Rally For College Station Following Public Radio Takeover

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 29TH, 2014 –– Opponents of the Georgia Public Broadcasting day-time takeover of 88.5/WRAS-FM held a rally yesterday at Hurt Park today as students returned to campus. According to The AJC's Rodney Ho: “Because the agreement between GSU President Mark Becker and GPB CEO Teya Ryan was announced during finals week at the end of the school year in May of this year, many students have not had the chance to voice their anger and frustration at this one-sided agreement which gives GPB everything they want, and gives GSU students nothing but empty promises in return,” said Zachary Lancaster, president of Album 88 Alumni, in a press release. “We also want to point out to new students that one of the key reasons some of them chose GSU—a student-run radio station—has been largely given to a state government agency and will not broadcast student-created content for most of each day.” GPB took over daytime operations of WRAS’s FM airwaves in late June with news/talk programming. The students’ music programming still airs in evenings and nights on 88.5 while an HD feed is provided during the day. Students, fans and alum are upset for many reasons, including the way the deal was done without their input and the loss of access to such a valuable FM signal for breaking new music.

STUDY: Facebook Still Rules Among 14-54 Yr. Olds; Instagram Getting Traction

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 28TH, 2014 –– NuVoodoo Media Services revealed additional findings from its fourth and latest NuVoodoo Ratings Prospects Study. The company interviewed nearly 1100 respondents, ages 14-54, in all PPM markets to update NuVoodoo’s insights on emerging social media platforms. The findings have important implications for connecting listeners with radio stations. Leigh Jacobs, Vice President, Research for NuVoodoo said: “Facebook remains the dominant Social Media platform among these 14-54 year olds and, despite all the hype surrounding them, both Snapchat and Vine are comparatively small players overall. While other players get more coverage, Instagram has the deepest penetration among our sample of Teens 14-17 after YouTube and Facebook – and is getting traction among Adults 18-34.” Jacobs continued: “We also wanted to explore usage momentum – especially for Facebook. Among the users of each platform, we netted out those saying they’re using a platform more and those saying they’re using it less. We found continuing positive momentum for Facebook even among 14-17 year olds. Other platforms have stronger momentum, but given its tremendous reach, Facebook remains a powerful tool for connecting with listeners.” For more information about NuVoodoo Media Services, contact Carolyn Gilbert at 888.9VOODOO (888.986.6366) and at cg@nuvoodoo.com.

Get the father of one of the hottest pop stars in the world to throw water on all the hype about 7her divorce from another giant star. That was the case yesterday on Cumulus' KRBE's Roula and Ryan Show when Mathew Knowles, father of Beyonce, told them 'It's a Jedi mind trick.' Claiming Beyonce and Jay Z used divorce rumors to 'ignite' tour sales. Mathew Knowles claims they hyped up rumors of a split from Jay Z to boost ticket sales for their 'On The Run' tour. "These things are hyped ‘sometimes to ignite that tour.’ He explained: ‘It’s called a Jedi mind trick. The Jedi mind trick fools you a lot of times.’ Being a music executive, Knowles says it works, pointing out that Solange's album sales 'went up 200%' after her now infamous elevator scuffle. Adding credence to all this was this past Sunday's appearance during the VMA's where the family looked all lovey dovey. And just how fast did this interview spread? In mere minutes, it was picked up by radaronline.com, dailymail.co.uk just to name a few. Oh yes, add Jockline to that. as well. PHOTO/screengrab WATCH INTERVIEW HERE

There Will Be A NASH ICON Morning Show Says John Dickey

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 27TH, 2014 –– In a conference call with trade reporters this week, Cumulus' Co-COO John Dickey said 'Historically, very little has been understood about the Country format and Country music, and there have been stereotypes about Country music and artists. Now, Country is one of the most explosive formats for nearly 100 million people in the U.S. The size of the Country marketplace is massive. Cumulus, through its newly launched NASH Icon format, is modernizing the Country format. Cumulus launched the new format, which originates from Cumulus’ 7NASH Campus in Nashville, across 15 of its stations last in the last week. NASH is Cumulus’ Country lifestyle and entertainment brand. ... Country is the last format of its size that has not fragmented. Rock is so fragmented now that it is in a state of emergency; Talk has fragmented over the last 10-12 years; Sports has fragmented; etc. The time has come for Country to fragment. ... The Country format we hear on most Country stations today is one of the last multi-generational formats programmed like Top 40. NASH ICON is to mainstream Country as Hot AC is to AC. ... Based on the metrics of the Country artists and the low burn of the artists that are not present on country stations today, it’s time for Country to fragment. This fragmentation will not cannibalize Country, but it will grow Country’s share." Dickey added: NASH ICON is not about nostalgia—This is not about retro. For mega-artists like Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney, NASH ICON allows them to be properly contextualized and to build new listeners.' There will be a NASH ICON morning show. It will be more of a living room setting and will be more interview-driven by the artists. The show will provide a good opportunity for artists to interact with their fans. We’ll be rolling out the new NASH ICON morning show between now and the end of the year. There will also be a NASH ICON weekend show rolling out for Mainstream Country later this year. NASH ICON will be delivered via the Storq platform, which allows stations to take any daypart or part of any daypart and customize that locally (versus plug and play). READ ENTIRE REPORT HERE

KGO'S Ron Owens Reveals He's Had Parkinson's Disease Since 2001

The revelation that Robin Williams had Parkinson's finally pushed Owens to decide to go public.

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 26TH, 2014 –– Longtime KGO San Francisco host Ronn Owens (L) says he's had Parkinson's disease since 2001 but held off talking about it because he didn't want people to feel sorry for him according to sfgate.com. Owens says "The main reason that I didn't want to come out, it's twofold," he said last week in an interview at the KGO studio. "One, I just cannot stand the thought of people feeling sorry for me. And the other, which is more of a factor with me, is that I don't want to be defined" by Parkinson's. The revelation that Robin Williams had Parkinson's is what finally pushed Owens to go public. "I felt it was important to tell people that you can have it like I have for 12 1/2 years and not be severely impacted by it. It's possible, and it's not a death sentence." Parkinson's is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system with no known cause or cure. Its symptoms and rate of progression can vary from person to person. Some people may be in a wheelchair just a few years after diagnosis, Owens said, but for others, like himself, the rate of progression is more moderate. [WATCH: DJ Laz Returns; Opens Up About Tragic Boat Accident

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 26TH, 2014 –– As Jockline previously reported (JD 8.18), popular Miami host DJ Laz returned to the air this week at Hits 97.3 along with his co-host Kimmy B. Following his show, he was interviewed by CBS' Channel 4's Lisa Petrillo. “I’m not good at certain things. Running a marathon isn’t one of the things I am good at. Radio, I’m good at. It’s my passion and for me there’s no better place to be than radio. The welcome home has been overwhelming.” Petrillo writes: It’s been a tough couple of months for the 43-year-old DJ who was involved in a tragic accident last May. He was at the helm of a boat that fatally slashed a young man who was trying to help free it from a sandbar. In litigation now, Laz cannot discuss specifics about the accident but did reflect on that horrible day. “At the end of the day it’s the worst possible thing that could ever happen,” said DJ Laz. “I’m a Dad, I’m a brother and my heart goes out to the family and I wish I can speak to the family. I did reach out but now with attorneys involved and litigation nothing can be said but it is the worst thing that’s ever happened so far.” Laz said the idea of coming back to the radio, back to his listeners, is what has pulled him through the tough time. It’s a job he loves and does not take for granted. WATCH HERE

Jockline Gets Behind The Scenes At The Emmys With Sablan

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 26TH, 2014 –– As is our tradition, we once again called on our unofficial on-the-scene reporter, Tommy Sablan, exec. producer of The Jeff & Jer' Show KyXy San Diego, to give us a special behind the scenes look at last night's event along with Laura Cain, Emily Griffiths, and Anita Bartram. Sablan tells Jockline: 'It was very cool to be with the 'Breaking Bad' cast. They all were very emotional when each person won a category. Bryan Cranston was in the front row and we knew he was crying when Aaron Paul won because his guest, who may have been his daughter, kept turning around to us mouthing that he was crying. Hollywood just like every teenager in the world is addicted to their smartphone. Everyone is checking messages or their social media sites non stop through the show. It was cool to see Jon Voight! He looked good and went around during commercial breaks to say hello to the big stars up front. He was like in the 6th row. It looked like he was kind of the new Jack Nicholson type person. He got a lot of respect from the younger actors. As for Billy Crystal very heartfelt tribute to Robin Williams (see Popline below for video link of full tribute), he says 'You felt the love he had for Robin. Everyone in the audience paid attention. We hear Billy Crystal had a hard time at rehearsal getting through it.' PS: Aside from jumping the fence to snag a few seats at the Emmys, Sablan is also set to moderate next year's 'Producer Forum' at the 27th annual Morning Show Boot Camp. Missouri Host Claims She Was Fired for Being Gay; Company Flatly Denies

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 25TH, 2014 –– The host of a morning show in Springfield Missouri told the News-Leader last Friday she believes she was laid off because of her sexual orientation and advocacy — a claim a company official flatly denies. "It's humiliating, and I am absolutely 100 percent convinced this has to do with my sexuality and my advocacy on behalf of my community," said Jennifer Scott Stevens (L), who went by Jennifer Scott at 105.1 Bob FM. GM Jason McCuthin says the termination of Stevens' employment was entirely "a budgetary decision." McCuthin called Stevens "a great person" and said he was disappointed to hear her comments regarding being let go. "As someone who attended her marriage reception, it's a little disheartening that she would assume this station didn't support her wholeheartedly," he said. "We have other people on staff who have the same lifestyle, and they get the same support she did," he added. On Steven's Facebook page, she posted "You know, I was never once written up, never reprimanded, was in the top 5 of all radio personalities in the Best of 417 last year and was even asked to be a shareholder in the company a few short months ago because the GM and the Board of Directors had so much confidence in my future tenure with the company. Then, I come out publicly in the paper, begin to advocate for others in the lgbt community and...I'm a budget cut." READ COMPLETE POST HERE

MEMOIR: Former Seattle Host Believes It Was A Rival Station That Shot Their Giant Inflated Pig

7THE MOUTH, AUGUST 25TH, 2014 –– By now we all know the 70's through 90's was filled with (s)ex, drugs and rock n' roll. Adding to that narrative is former KISW/Seattle GM/PD/Host Beau Phillips with his memoir “I Killed Pink Floyd’s Pig.” According to seattletimes.com the book's title comes from a promotion involving Pink Floyd’s final tour in Seattle in 1987, Phillips (with the help of concert promoter John Bauer) persuaded the band to let KISW air its giant inflatable pig — a 40-foot-long prop dubbed Algie — to the roof of the station’s Seattle headquarters. The concert was a huge success, but on the morning prior to the concert at the former Kingdome, one of Phillips jocks phoned him at 6 a.m. to report the pig was gone. As it turned out, someone had shot an arrow through the mascot. He suspected it must have come from their arch rival,” Phillips laughed. Earlier this month marked 35 years since Pat Benatar took the rock world by storm. Phillips remember because KISW was the first radio station in America to play her smash, Heartbreaker. The story is in my book - along with this picture. Pat's at center; Beau at far right. ORDER BOOK HERE

You're like a caller who doesn't listen, OK?" Francesa defends his comments saying that he likes Calipari as a coach, repeating that he a master recruiter. 26 Years Later, Scott Shannon Tied For No. One In Big Apple

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 22ND, 2014 –– For the legendary Scott Shannon, the latest ratings were like deja vu all over again as his WCBS-FM morning show ties for No. 1 tied with WCBS-AM for week of Aug. 2 coming 26 years after Shannon was last in the top spot, at Z100. He tells David Hinkley with The New York Daily News: "The last time my show was No. 1 was in 1988 at Z100,” Shannon muses. “This is a strange business, isn’t it?” To put that gap in perspective, the longest time between No. 1 chart hits for any musical artist is 24 years and 11 months — for Cher, between “Dark Lady” in 1974 and “Believe” in 1999. The morning show hitting No. 1 for a week doesn’t lock down the spot. Still, it’s No. 1." Shannon tells Jockline Daily: "I've got a great morning crew that I love working with .. Plus, the whole station is Live 24/7. What the hell else could a guy ask for?" Jacobs Media Taps Jim McBride As This Week's Most 'SKINovative'

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 22ND, 2014 –– In Jacobs Media's weekly pick for radio's most innovative, this week's Friday choice is none other than Jim McBride (shown), founder of Mrskin.com. Jacob's chief Fred Jacobs says "The growth of the Internet has affected radio in infinite ways, including the creation of many unique partnerships. None is as interesting as the ongoing relationship between radio and MrSkin.com founder Jim McBride. It was Confucius who said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Jim typifies that sentiment, building a multi-media empire powered by broadcast radio, while pursuing a path he is truly passionate about. You might remember MrSkin.com from the pivotal role the brand played in the 2007 Judd Apatow movie Knocked Up. Seth Rogen’s character spends most of his time in the movie trying to develop a website that specializes in celebrity nude scenes, only to learn – too late – that someone got there first. That someone, of course, was Mr. Skin. ... Jim McBride (call him Mr. Skin) launched the site that chronicles celebrity nude scenes in movies and television in 1999 when the Internet as we know it today was still in its infancy. Within five minutes after it launched, the site had its first paid member and today, 15 years later, it averages nine million unique visitors a month. Much of that growth was spurred by McBride’s ongoing appearances on radio shows across the country. He’s a charming, affable guest with unique content and the ability to discuss when and where any Hollywood actress – or actor – has appeared in the nude. The site’s growth has spawned several other radio businesses, including the launch of several morning show prep services, marketed under the Good Parts Media brand umbrella. Jean Kasem asked the Norway government to allow the burial in a letter in which she claimed she would be moving to Norway soon. She also said her husband "always said that Norway symbolizes peace and looks like heaven and I would like to respectfully fulfill his wishes." In letters to the Norwegian government, Kasem's relatives and friends — including his daughter, Kerri Kasem, and former Lieutenant Governor of California Mike Curb (shown with Kasem) stated the late DJ "always wanted to be buried in California," where he lived for 53 years. "We are looking at it once again to see if we made the right decision or not," said the city's Managing Director of Funeral Service Wenche Elizabeth Madsen Eriksson. said. "The relatives are saying she has no ancestry in Norway and they say that she’s not going to move to Norway at all. They also said she has not been visiting him and doesn’t care about him at all. We don't know if it's true. We need to talk to our lawyers to do more research." "Even if the reason (Jean) gave us wasn’t right, we don’t necessarily have to reject it," Eriksson said. "Casey Kasem can still be buried in Norway. But we must consider the whole situation. We have to decide who is right here, and we might need more information."

STUDY: Broadcast Radio Tops Pandora In Music Satisfaction

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 21ST, 2014 –– NuVoodoo Media Services has announced additional findings from its fourth and latest NuVoodoo Ratings Prospects Study. The company interviewed nearly 1100 respondents, ages 14-54, in all PPM markets to update NuVoodoo’s insights on the relationship between broadcast radio and the leading digital music provider, Pandora. The findings indicate that 62% of Pandora users listen to Pandora at least 30 minutes per day and nearly as many Pandora users spend that much time daily with broadcast radio. As Pandora experience increases, so does the percentage that listen to it at least 30 minutes. But the percentage spending at least that much time with broadcast radio did not decrease. It’s Pandora’s technology against radio’s research and decades of experience,” says NuVoodoo's Leigh Jacobs. “Our data show that Broadcast beats Pandora for music satisfaction – big among those who align themselves with rock-leaning formats,” continues Jacobs. Carolyn Gilbert (L), NuVoodoo President said: “Radio’s on a bigger stage than it’s been since the advent of TV, but it does a great job making great music programming easy for consumers. We’ve known for years that most people don’t want to program their own music or design their own cars, for that matter. They want to pick something that works for them and enjoy it.” Leigh Jacobs, Vice President, Research for NuVoodoo Media Services said: “We know that many Pandora listeners are also heavy users of broadcast radio, but we’re interested in whether those using Pandora begin to pull away from broadcast radio over time. These latest results validate our hypothesis that longer experience with Pandora doesn’t equate to less listening to broadcast radio. For more information, visit www.nuvoodoo.com.

Fitzpatrick said on the Triple M website: "Gene Simmons' recent comments are misguided and insensitive. Late Tuesday Kerri Kasem posted in Facebook and Twitter 'My Dad's closest friends and family members have all band together to tell the people of Norway that my father wanted to be buried in his hometown of Los Angeles, California. Look at the signatures, they are my Dad's family and best friends from 30 to 64 years and his agent and friend of 48 years. The former Lt. Governor of California, the man my brother is named after, wrote his own letter. NOT ONLY did my father's family sign this petition a member of Jean's family signed it. WE WILL HONOR MY FATHER'S WISHES! But make no mistake, we all believe our father and friend CASEY KASEM is free! We love you DAD.' This comes in the aftermath of last week's news that his widow, Jean Kasem, planned to bury him in Norway. In their letter, they wrote “We just wanted to set the record straight, regarding our father Casey Kasem. As beautiful as your country is, our father has never spoken of any desire to be buried in Norway either to us or to his friends,” the letter states. “In fact, it was the opposite. Casey wanted to be buried in his hometown of Los Angeles, California, his home for over 53 years.” It also claims that Jean “abandoned and isolated” Casey during the last year of his life in favor of her boyfriend, John Paul Gressy. They close by saying: “We beg you, to please decline the request of Jean Kasem and her daughter Liberty to bury Casey Kasem in Norway.” There was also a follow up with a letter from former Calif. Lt. Governor, Mike Curb who offered to pay for burial expense at Forest Lawn Cemetery In Los Angeles.

Shortened Songs Format Cut Short In Canada As Artists Cry Foul

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 20TH, 2014 ––A radio station in Alberta has given up a format featuring shorter versions of songs which it said gave listeners “twice the music," according to globalnews.com. As Jockline Daily reported nearly three weeks ago, 90.3 Amp (CKMP) in Calgary, adopted the QuickHitz concept. Newcap became the first station in Canada to attempt the format, but Steve Jones (L), VP/Programming, says the station went back to its original format Tuesday. Jones told globalnews.com: “As we evaluated it, we made the decision that this week we would just go back to the old strategy because to do this successfully would involve far too many lawyers getting far too rich.” Jones wouldn’t name which artists threatened legal action except to say they were mostly Canadian. "It just came to a point where we said it isn’t worth risking the relationships with all of our content providers, the various artists that we play, at our radio station.” Of course, the concept isn't entirely off the table. Jones says 'Our plan is to go back to the drawing board, maybe work a bit closer with some of the various stakeholders in the industry and try and bring this back at a later date.”

WOGL/Philly's Ross Brittain Crosses 40-Yr. Mark On The Air

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 20TH, 2014 –– One of radio's most revered personalities, WOGL-FM/Philly's Ross Brittain, has crossed one of the industry's rare plateaus: 40 years on the air. As one of the orignal cast members of the much celebrated Z100/NYC's, Jockline Daily caught up with Brittain to share a few memories of long radio journey. He told us at 23 years old he landed a job at WIIN-97 Atlanta, a 5-KW daytime-only AM station that Hugh Wilson modeled "WKRP in Cincinnati" after. The morning DJ was a guy named Bobby Harper, whom they modeled Johnny Fever after. They flipped formats to "Progressive Rock"... and one day he found out they were looking for a DJ, so I went over. The PD had heard me on the college station doing a weekend show. I said, "I could do mid-days." He said, "What about mornings -- your weekend show was kind of crazy." Ross later moved to New Orleans and then Baton Rouge. Their afternoon guy there went across the street to WJBO-AM, where a guy named Brian Wilson was working, and he thought he'd team us up. They soon left for Z-93/Atlanta, then hired away by WABC /NYC. In 1981 Z100 was in the process of going on the air. A guy named Scott Shannon was the PD. Ross went over thinking he might get the PM drive slot that had opened up. Scott said something to the effect of, "You're not an afternoon jock. Why don't you do mornings with me?" Ross said 'I found out later he used to tape my show in Atlanta (like he did with countless other shows during his long career). Once there he joined with John Rio (Mr Leonard) and Dr Dave Kolin writing bits and then we'd go produce them with J. R. Nelson, the production director. John Bell... the public service director, also did some writing with us.' And what does he consider the highlight of the last 40 years? "That would be meeting my wife, Rasa Kaye (shown above)," he said. When we began at WABC, we already had Joe Nolan (who's back working with Scott at WCBS-FM) to do traffic. But we needed a weather person as well, and we went through a pile of tapes looking for someone. We chose Rasa out of those tapes. We didn't start dating for a while, but then it was hot and heavy and we decided to get married. and tied the knot in February, 1982. But we couldn't tell anybody, because it was against ABC policy to be married and work for the same supervisor. So everybody thought we were living together --and that was OK. But married, oh, no! Ross has also just crossed the 20-year mark of his prep service, "The Ross Brittain Report." PHOTO/Brittain BTW, Dee Snyder used to work across the hall when he did mornings at KISS 95.7 in Hartford. Dee did mornings at WMRQ-FM. BTW: Notice arrow pointed at quarter on top of turntable arm in vintage studio photo. CONGRATULATE ROSS HERE

Adam Carolla Settles With Patent Troll

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 19TH, 2014 –– Adam Carolla has settled with the podcasting patent troll Personal Audio according to eff.org, the Electronics Frontier Foundation. They posted opposing scenarios resulting from the case opining that Carolla perhaps didn't have to pay Personal Audio a penny. That said, they also believe Carolla gave up the opportunity to challenge the patent and the chance to get his attorney’s fees. Meanwhile, EFF’s own challenge with Personal Audio’s that goes before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board at the Patent Office is scheduled for a hearing in December. With the Carolla matter behind them, Personal Audio is also scheduled to go to trial against a number of television groups such as NBC, CBS, and Fox. As for the good Carolla's closure brought, EFF says that 'everyone who donated in support deserves massive credit for putting up such a strong 7fight. The podcasting community showed that it would not be shaken down ... By fighting back, Carolla forced Personal Audio to actually mount a case and establish that it deserved money. That turned out to be too hard for the troll. Moving to the down side of settling, Carolla gives up the chance to make Personal Audio pay his fees. Even uglier, EFF says "Almost every defendant, no matter how strong their case, ends up settling with the patent troll. Litigating patent cases is extraordinarily expensive. Carolla raised almost half a million dollars and that still would not have been enough to fund a defense through trial. READ ENTIRE REPORT HERE

KISS Ban Mounts In Wake Of Gene Simmon's Suicide Comments

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 18TH, 2014 –– First came Sixx Sense' Nikki Sixx calling out (see JD 8.15) colleague Gene Simmons over his insensitive comments regarding suicide and depression in songfacts.com, now the backlash has extended to radio. According to blabbermouth.comAustralian broadcaster Triple M has pulled all KISS tracks from its playlists countrywide. Over at WPYX/Albany NY, host Uncle Vito vowed not to play KISS music, labeling Simmons “an arrogant, unfeeling a—hole.” Power 97 Winnepeg also joined in with its Kiss Free Zone (shown). Simmons has SINCE responded to all this backlash on his Facebook page with the following message: "I want to make this statement about my views on depression for the record and to clarify my prior remarks. To the extent my comments reported by the media speak of depression, I was wrong and in the spur of the moment made remarks that in hindsig7ht were made without regard for those who truly suffer the struggles of depression. I sincerely apologize to those who were offended by my comments. I recognize that depression is very serious and very sad when it happens to anyone, especially loved ones. I deeply support and am empathetic to anyone suffering from any disease, especially depression. have never sugarcoated my feelings regarding drug use and alcoholics. Somewhere along the line, my intention of speaking in very directly and perhaps politically incorrectly about drug use and alcoholics has been misconstrued as vile commentary on depression. Unkind statements about depression was certainly never my intention. Fully, you will know that and I do not intend to defend myself here and now, by listing the myriad charities and self-help organizations I am involved with. Rather, I simply want to be clear that my heart goes out to anyone suffering from depression and I deeply regret any offhand remarks in the heat of an interview that might have suggested otherwise.' Among Simmon's comments in songfacts.com, he said: "I'm the guy who says 'Jump!' when there's a guy on top of a building who says, 'That's it, I can't take it anymore, I'm going to jump .. Are you kidding? Why are you announcing it? Shut the f--- up, have some dignity and jump!" Simmons Photo/Oscar Schnell

'There... I've Said It.' Robin Marshall Reveals She Has Cancer

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 18TH, 2014 –– The popular voice-over specialist, recently turned author revealed on her Facebook page today "last week ending in D-Day on Friday when the bomb was dropped in my lap: I have stage 2 uterine cancer and need a hysterectomy. In my brain I’m thinking, "Those are all my good parts! How could they turn on me NOW?” It’s like I want to have a good "talkin’ to,” with myself. With this news, I shook, as people do when they’re in shock, I asked the doctor to explain it to me, which she did… and after finishing her spiel consisting of medical lingo, tumors, numbers and parts I didn’t even know I had… she asked if I understood. I said, "F*** No! I need to call my girlfriend who’s currently a chief radiologist at Sloan Kettering in NY and let you tell her so she can tell me!” She continued by drawing me pictures of my insides, where I calmly began pushing numbers on my cell phone until Arlene answered. I interrupted the fast-talking doc and said, "Here, tell her everything.” She did! I’ve decided that I’ve always been forthcoming here on Facebook and Twitter and it is ridiculous for me to continue to hide what I’m facing, while at the same time I’m the LAST ONE to look for sympathy! Holy Cow! I just released this book: "The Diary of a Sugar Mom!” I’m already thinking, …”Hmmm… if I Die… I might sell more books and my Kids will be better off!” It’s the entrepreneur in me, I just can’t help it!" She closes by added: So here I am… a Sugar Mom who just got (B)itch-slapped in the face by a huge hand of reality. I’m assuming I overstepped, (what else is new?) and this is just God’s way of putting me back in my place or just slowing my (a)ss down a bit until she can catch up. I get it. I’ll be good. I promise! Please, no fake comments. I shared with you because I want you to go to the doctor if you feel something’s wrong or out of whack ... Any conversations we have via email are private. Period. Robin@RobinMarshallSugarMom.com.

KTKX, formerly known as X106.7, is in its fourth year of playing great classic rock with music San Antonio listeners have grown to love; and the new Eagle 106.7 will continue broadcasting that same great sound. “Some recent changes in the market allowed us to emerge as the only full signal classic rock station in San Antonio,” said CMG San Antonio VP and Market Manager Dan Lawrie. “We felt this was a great time to introduce The Eagle brand and let people know great classic rock can be heard anywhere in San Antonio only on 106.7 FM.” ########## CCM+E Birmingham has launched Classic Rock 94.9 FM. "Today is a historic day for Birmingham radio as we bring true classic rock music back to the Magic City," Clear Channel Birmingham vice president and general manager Ray Quinn said in a release. "For over two years, there's been a huge absence of the format since the legendary Rock 99 went away. Rock 99 had an iconic following of fans and advertisers, so we've brought it back on a new frequency at 94.9 FM." ######### Meanwhile, up in Fort Wayne, IN, Adams Radio has launched a new R&B Station B-96.9 R&B + Old School. The on air line up consist of Tom Joyner in the morning, Big Kess Middays, Doug Banks in PM Drive and Keith Sweat at night. Big Kess is live and local and also serves as the PD for B-96.9. Previously Kess was Mornings on WNHT “Wild 96” in Fort Wayne. B-96 is consulted by Jim Richards of Valley-Richards-Donovan. Ron Stone, Adams Radio CEO said “This may have been the largest hole in the market. Fort Wayne has an African American population of about 9% of which no radio station served. I have been completed overwhelmed by the immediate response to the station. Everyone deserves a radio station that they can embrace...and we have delivered one that the listeners can be proud of."

ABC's Ann Compton To Retire In September

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 18TH, 2014 –– ABC Radio News VP/GM Steve Jones sent the following note to its radio division last Friday about ABC News White House Correspondent, Ann Compton: "Last winter, Ann Compton raised a subject she’s hinted at before and that I’d previously managed to avoid: her retirement. She told me how amazing it was being a new grandmother and suggested that, after 40-years at ABC News, perhaps it was time to transition to the next phase of her life. I listened, smiled and told her we’d chat again, hoping she’d change her mind. But, by the spring, it was clear to me that Ann was ready to leave the job she has loved so that she can spend more time with the people she loves: her wonderful family. We have a date set in late September for us to celebrate Ann’s career in a setting that will let her friends and co-workers offer tributes and recollections about one of the most amazing women in journalism and one of the greatest friends and colleagues I have had the pleasure to work with. For now, though, Ann has asked that she be allowed to continue reporting from the White House without distraction. We’ll have plenty of time next month to celebrate her career express our admiration, appreciation and love."

REPORT: Casey Kasem To Be Buried in Norway

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 15TH, 2014 –– As Jockline reporter earlier this week (JD 8.12), the body of Casey Kasem was allegedly being moved out of the country for his burial. Now, according to Norwegian newspaper VG, a private investigator, Logan Clarke, hired by Kasem's daughter Kerri told The Hollywood Reporter, "He's going to be buried in Norway." In the Norwegian press account, Wenche Madsen Eriksson, a government official, was quoted by reporter Marcus Husby saying, "It is arranged. He's going to Oslo." The report said the official would not specify which of Oslo's 20 cemeteries and one crematorium was chosen by Kasem's widow, Jean Kasem. This final destination would end one of media's most troubling and tragic episodes which goes back several month to when Casey's older Children picketed outside of his Santa Monica estate. "We don't know what [Jean Kasem's] plans are," says Danny Deraney, spokesman for Kerri Kasem. "We just know that she wants to keep Casey away from [his] family and friends and by the looks of it, hiding from law enforcement." Family members tell THR that the feud between Jean Kasem and her husband's family has gone on for 35 years. An investigation by Santa Monica Police is still underway with allegations that Jean Kasem abused the late Kasem after removing his in the middle of the night from a Santa Monica hospital to Las Vegas and then to Washington State.

[LISTEN] Nikki Sixx Calls Out Gene Simmons Over Suicide Comments

"He thinks everybody listens to him, that he is the god of thunder. He will tell you he is the greatest man on earth, and to be honest with you, I like Gene. But in this situation, I don’t like Gene.." - Sixx

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 15TH, 2014 –– This week on Sixx Sense with Nikki Sixx, Sixx and co-host Jenn Marino discussed KISS frontman Gene Simmons’ recent interview with SongFacts.com, in which he expressed his lack of sympathy for people suffering from substance abuse and depression. Sixx, a recovering addict who suffered a near fatal drug overdose more than 25 years ago, called out Simmons for his insensitive remarks, which included the suggestion that depressed people should kill themselves. Sixx: “…It’s pretty moronic because he thinks everybody listens to him, that he is the god of thunder. He will tell you he is the greatest man on earth, and to be honest with you, I like Gene. But in this situation, I don’t like Gene, I don’t like Gene’s words, because…there is a 20-year-old kid out there who is a KISS fan and reads this and goes, ‘You know what? He’s right. I should just kill myself’…” Sixx continued: “…For people who are depressed, there is a way out. There are many, many ways out. And I don’t want people to listen to an interview from a rock star, who’s telling you the only way out is out, when I’m telling you, and I wrote it in The Heroin Diaries, you can get out of this. ...One in 10 Americans are affected by depression at one point in their life, so this is another thing to think about. At one point in your life, meaning it will come and it will go…they say all bad things must pass, all bad things will pass, so keep that in the back of your mind if you’re feeling depression, and don’t listen to people who don’ t know what they’re talking about.” LISTEN HERE

[LISTEN] Host's Comments Helps Divert Listener From Considering Suicide

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 14TH, 2014 –– A caller to yesterday's syndicated Michael Savage show who weighed in on the host's assertion that suicide is an “aggressive act” that shows no consideration for loved ones, told the host his frank talk about the subject helped him decide not to take his own life. Identifying himself as Joe he told Savage he had been contemplating suicide for the past several months, especially in the past week. Joe said that when he heard of Williams’ suicide, he asked himself, “If a guy like that could, why not me?” On Tuesday's show, Savage, who disclosed he and Williams lived in the same San Francisco-area neighborhood, urged any listeners who might be considering suicide to think about how it would affect their loved ones. Joe rang up Savage and said: 'Your show yesterday – I’m not going to say prevented me – but it did make me think about my kids and my wife,” the caller said. Savage said he had met Williams many times when the two were walking their dogs. Savage described Williams as “a nice guy, and genuinely funny, too.” He added “Committing suicide is the most outrageously aggressive and selfish act you can commit against your family,” Savage said. After discovering Joe was suffering financially, he asked his audience to join in helping Joe get through the rest of the month by donating through the Savage Legal Defense Fund. LISTEN HERE

JACOBS: 'BJ Shea Steps Up To Superstar Status At MSBC Chicago'

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 14TH, 2014 –– As we've always said, it's not us, but our attendees who help us shine most at Morning Show Boot Camp. This was never more evident than during last week's 26th Annual Morning Show Boot Camp in Chicago. Among them, radio's beloved BJ Shea (L - KISW/Seattle) whose opening address not only endeared himself further with his radio comrades, but caught the attention of radio furturist Fred Jacobs. In today's blog, he writes 'You may be thinking that it’s “Seattle DJ Week” on this blog – and you wouldn’t be wrong. But it turns out the most fascinating stories in radio last week weren’t about the whereabouts of Casey Kasem’s corpse or what happened to radio’s Q2 revenue – they were about Bob Rivers hanging up his headphones and B.J. Shea stepping up to superstar status at “Morning Show Boot Camp.” Boot Camp is one of the most unique events in all of radio because most of the people in attendance make their living on the air. If you believe that the future (not to mention the past and present) of radio is its personality – the people behind the mics – then you would enjoy Boot Camp. There is a different vibe in the room when it’s filled with performers – the folks who are paid to entertain and to inform. They are the faces of most great stations. And the list of radio icons in attendance was a long one: The Bert Show, Paul Castronovo, Roula And Ryan, Rick Rumble, Dave & Carole, Mark & Mercedes, Ross Britain, 2 Guys Named Chris, Larry Norton, Brother Wease, Fitz, Phil Hendrie, and many many more. These personalities come together every year to compare notes, compete for the best bits, have a lot of laughs, and hang out at a conference that almost has a radio throwback feel to it. Yes, radio has changed. It’s a business that is obsessed by ROI, IPOs, and EBITDA. But let’s not forget the DJ. No matter how much Wall Street thinks it has us bought and sold, drawn and quartered, radio is a circus. And the Big Top was in all its glory in Chicago last week. And B.J. Shea was the ringmaster ... B.J. truly set the tone at Boot Camp. In a 30-minute speech filled with passion and inspired self-deprecation, B.J. looked more like he was giving a TED Talks presentation than one of his signature rants. No notes, no slides, but a steady stream of introspective advice and dead-on observations for a room of talent looking for a guiding theme from this Boot Camp. ... “Great art comes from crazy people” was one of B.J.’s lessons. Crowd Buys Into Miley Cyrus Impersonator Outside Concert

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 14TH, 2014 –– Imagine bringing a Miley Cyrus impersonator (complete with bodyguards) outside one of the pop diva's concerts and both fans and local media buying into it? This was the case as Miley Cyrus came back to Kansas City and 95.7 The Vibe (KCHZ) made their presence known outside of the Sprint Center! They brought in a Miley Cyrus impersonator and had the crowd going crazy, with many people believing it was Miley and stopping to get their pictures taken (the staff was calling her "our special guest"). KCTV5 even did a live segment featuring 95.7 (inset)The Vibe outside of the Sprint Center. During the show the excitement continued with Miley Cyrus spotting our impersonator in the crowd, talking to her from the stage and even giving 95.7 The Vibe props before showing a picture of our Miley impersonator on the big screen! Since the concert The Kansas City Star also wrote a story about 95.7 The Vibe bringing in their very own Miley Cyrus look-alike. The night was a big win for everyone involved! NICELY DONE! Montreal Host Looks For Girlfriend With Posters

By Graham Mack

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 14TH, 2014 –– Radio personality Stuntman Sam is looking for love in a rather old-fashioned way: posters. According to montrealgazzette, Sam Lupovich, a.k.a. Stuntman Sam on The Beat 92.5 FM’s morning show, has posted handbills all over downtown Montreal to announce he’s looking for a girlfriend. The poster features a picture of the 31-year-old with a description of himself as serious, fun, outgoing, employed and very handsome. As the setup goes, after a decade of freelance fun and adventure in Toronto, Sam moved back to his beloved hometown of Montreal last fall — and has since had some trouble finding a girlfriend. “I’ve tried online dating and all that jazz, but obviously that hasn’t worked out …” his poster reads. “Pretty sure it’s them, not me .. If you’re single (or not), and ready to take a chance on a good guy willing to throw himself out there, take my number and do something about it.” If you want to see how Sam's doing, give him a call on 514 798-2015.

BOB FM becomes “Robin FM” in Robin Williams Tribute –– BOB fm in London’s Home Counties paid tribute to the late Robin Williams on Tuesday by re-branding as “Robin fm”. The daytime music schedule was interspersed with clips of Robin’s performance as the radio DJ Adrian Cronauer from the 1987 film, “Good Morning Vietnam”. Special sweepers were made that said, “Robin FM”. Program Director Graham Mack said, “We all grew up watching Robin’s movies and he always got a warm reception every time he appeared in London. It was the least we could do to honour the life and work of one of the greatest entertainers of all time”.
